 Aluminium Compact Degasser (ACD)

Situation

Due to quality requirements, hydrogen levels need to be reduced in molten aluminium alloys.

Problem

In-line degassing units for the removal of hydrogen are normally box units which require insulation and a heating system to maintain the desired temperature of the metal being cast. These boxes require emptying and flushing before a change of alloy, which leads to metal losses.

Solution

Alcan has developed a compact, sealed modular degassing system, commercialised by STAS, which uses spinning nozzles in the molten aluminium directly in the casting trough prior to filtering and casting. No heating is required nor is there any loss of metal due to flushing when changing alloys.

Advantages

  • Reduces hydrogen levels to the same level as conventional degassers.
  • Removes alkalis and inclusions when either chlorine is used or salt added.
  • 2 to 8 rotor systems allow treatment of varying metal flow rates from 20 to up to 1,500 kg/min.
  • No loss of metal due to alloy changes.
  • No heating required of unit.
  • Lowers operating and maintenance costs compared with other degassing systems.
  • Modular design that adapts to a wide range of configurations.
  • Operates in sealed mode; very little dross formation.
