 Deep Bed Filter (DBF)

Situation

Aluminium alloys need to meet ever more stringent quality requirements, particularly for foil, can stock and litho sheets.

Problem

Porous tube filters and ceramic foam filters are available, but they are either expensive to operate or not as effective in achieving a consistent quality (CFFs operate in a "thin mode").

Solution

The DBF, designed and commercialised by STAS, placed between the furnace and the casting operation, consists of an insulated box containing layers of carefully sized alumina balls through which molten aluminium flows from top to bottom. They are available in sizes ranging from 50 to 1,500 kg/min flow rates. Up to 5,000 tonnes per filter medium can be expected, depending on the alloy and alloy changes.

Advantages

  • Low filtering cost.
  • Preheat station permits quick change of filter box to avoid downtime.
  • Different ball sizes allow custom quality requirements.
  • A complete size range of box means custom flow rates.
  • Box design adapts to casting station layout.
  • Excellent constancy and repeatability of results.
  • Inclusion removal efficiency higher than 90%.
  • Used for applications which are critical in terms of quality:  cans, rolled products, lithographic sheets, etc.
  • LiMCA and PodFa analysis show best quality requirements achieved with DBF.
  • In-line metal treatment with Aluminium Compact Degasser (ACD) produces highest quality for foil and can stock.
