Automatic Skimming of Molten Aluminium in a Crucible (In association with TAC)

Situation

Aluminium metal siphoned into a crucible frequently contains unwanted bath material which floats on the surface at temperatures exceeding approximately 800°C.

Problem

To reduce sodium levels in the molten aluminium using the TAC process, there must be no bath material present. Manual skimming is frequently used.

Solution

Automate the manual skimming in order to a) reduce labour costs together with safety and hygiene problems; and b) skim more efficiently by removing nearly 100% of material.

Advantages

  • Faster removal of bath material.
  • Operators not directly exposed to fumes and molten metal.
  • Automated operation.
  • Nearly 100% material removed.
